2016 Weekly Harvest Boxes Available!!

2016 Weekly Harvest Boxes AVAILABLE!

Hello Everyone!

It has certainly been a long time since last we corresponded and I hope you have all been happy, healthy, and organically prosperous. Much craziness has happened over the past year and I’m happy to let you know that our little family has finally settled and are looking forward to the 2016 farming season.

We have moved to Glen Valley where I will be working for Shirlene Cote of Earth Apple Farm at the Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-op. Until her recent move to the co-op, Shirlene was farming in Burnaby on a plot similar in size to the One Love Farm fields. She shares similar organic values and a passion for growing as I. We have helped each other out over the years and It is an honour to be working by her side. The fields we are farming have been certified organic for more than a decade and were previously tended by Jeremy Pritchard of Pitchfork Organic Farm. He will also be working with us for this season to ease the transfer. I am so excited to be surrounded  by like-minded, accomplished farmers to produce the highest quality organic, well loved vegetables  for you.

The great news is that, we will be offering a weekly Harvest Box Program (follow this link for details) with a pick-up point in Abbotsford, just down the road from the old farm. I can assure you that the quality of the produce will meet or exceed what you have grown accustomed to receiving from me. Also, if you are in Vancouver on Saturdays, we will be at the Trout Lake Farmers Market.

Also, we would love to involve you in the growing and harvesting of the veggies. Please contact either Shirlene or I if you are interested in volunteering. Glen Valley is truly a magical place and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Much Love and Thanks,

Please spread the word,

Farmer Chris

My New Job

Hello Everyone,

It may be a chilly, drizzly day here in Abbotsford but the sun is always shining at Tuscan Farm Gardens at the North end of Mt. Lehman road. Well… the proverbial sun that is.  If you are looking for a bright spot in your day, head down there to meander the immaculate, lavender focused gardens. Enjoy the serene atmosphere  of the apothecary as you browse the selection of hand-made  natural soaps and wellness products, many of which are made from herbs grown on the property. Relax with a lavender latte on the patio. Chat with the bright and knowledgable owner, Patricia, and her cheery assistant, Emily.

I am proud to tell you that I have been hired by Patricia, to help establish an organic market garden on the grounds. It’s a step up from the rustic  surroundings at the original One Love field, but certainly a welcome change. There is still a down to earth ambiance with a focus on the beauty of nature… and to boot, there are bathroom facilities and a warm shop. Fancy!!

So, to get to the point, we are harvesting our first greens of the season. We have beautiful bunching spinach which has that sweet tender taste, indicative of the early spring harvest. Spinach does not get any better than this. Also we have some colourful braising greens, a beautiful lettuce mix, young and wild arugula micro style greens, chives and rhubarb. The shop is open from 11am today until 4pm. Quantities are limited and if you show up between 2pm and 3pm, I will be there to give you a little tour and perhaps pick some more greens for you… just like old times!

I look forward to seeing you there,

Big Changes, Custom Vegetable Garden Design and a Vegan Cooking Class!

Having a nap in my quiet place!

Hello Everyone!

Long time no blog!  I hope that you have all been well. For us, it has been a nice quiet winter as our family has happily adjusted to it’s new addition: our beautiful baby boy, Arlo, who is settling in quite nicely. Becky and I would like to, once again, thank you all for your well-wishes and continued support.

I have certainly missed communicating with all of you and am looking forward to the 2015 farming season. There are some big changes happening with One Love Farm. Some of these changes may come as a shock.  I have not been able to come to a reasonable lease agreement for the property you know as One Love Farm. This means that the farm stand will not be operating, nor will I be offering a veggie box program for the 2015 season.

I am, however, in the process of negotiating rental of the farm’s south field for one more season. This is necessary because I already have my garlic planted  in that location. If I succeed in securing this 1.5 acre field, I will plant some of your favourite vegetable crops to be offerred for sale at the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market. I am also working towards a longer term solution for future years.

As well as my love of growing food for members of my community, I also have a strong desire to help others nurture that desire within themselves. Over the years I have done my best to empower others to grow their own vegetables. I now feel that it is time to move closer to that goal.  I will now be offering:

-custom plant start pre-ordersOur pepper babies one month ago that have since grown into happy, healthy and sturdy plants.

     -vegetable garden design

     -vegetable garden installation

-custom garden planning including         succession planting schedules

-hands-on teaching of techniques for growing your own food

-and much more! Please contact me for questions as to what I can offer

Each individual will have unique requirements and I aim to work within your vision to create abundance and beauty in your yard! Keep an eye on my website as I design new programs based upon your input.

VEGAN COOKING CLASS: “A Family Vegan Holiday Sampling: not just for vegans”

And another very exciting project on the horizon!  Abbotsford Community Services has asked me to teach a vegan, gluten-free cooking class. Given my love for growing and preparing wholesome plant-based foods, I, of course, jumped at this opportunity.

Here’s the details:

When: Thursday Feb 19th 6:30pm-8:30pm or  Thursday Feb 26th 6:30pm-8:30pm.

There will only be 10 students per class so they have decided to offer two dates:  The classes will be  structured to allow some participation and the opportunity to share the meal at the end of  the session.

Who:  To register, please contact: megan.capp@abbotsfordcommunityservices.com.

What: the class will consist of five delicious vegan recipe basics that, combined, cab be used to create a holiday feast. The main course in this first class will be my, “from scratch,” stuffed TofuTurkee bites with mushroom miso gravy.

Why: With this recipe under your belt, you’ll sure to be a hit and navigate around at any pot-luck or family dinner. For those at a loss for vegan substitutions at family dinners, you will learn five go to recipes. And, I’ll do my best to make the class both informative and entertaining.

Where: Community Kitchen, Old Courthouse Building, Abbotsford Community Services,                    2420 Montrose Avenue.

Cost: an affordable $20, two-hour session

It is with great joy that I accept this opportunity for further involvement with my community.  Depending on the interest and success of this first class, they would like to run a series of classes throughout the year.

Again, to register for our limited spaces please contact: megan.capp@abbotsfordcommunityservices.com.

Much love to you all!

New Farm Stand Hours and A Baby!

Meet Arlo Joseph Billion

Hello Everyone,

We apologize to any of you who showed up at the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market Last Saturday to find that we were not there. With the birth of our new son, Arlo, we decided it was best to take the weekend off to enjoy his precious first days on this earth. This week, however, it’s business as usual. Although Arlo is not quite old enough to be running the farm stand, I’ll be there with this week’s selection of fresh produce.

All good things must come to an end and sadly, Tuesday will be the last day to purchase our dahlias for the season. I’ve picked the last five bucketfulls and will have them bunched and ready for sale.

***Please take note that our farm stand hours have changed. We will now be open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3pm until 6pm due to the shorter days. Wewill also be at the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market on Saturday from 9am until 1pm.

Available this week:

Red Russian Garlic

Unpasteurized honey

Winter Squash

Carving Pumpkins

Thank-you, and see you there!

Farmer Chris
